If you're building a still from a kit, solder is what holds the whole experiment together. This 1 lb. roll of silver solder is made for joining copper, and it's good to have on the bench before you light a torch for the first time.
What's in the box
One 1 lb. roll of silver solder. It's used for copper seams, fittings, and connections that need to last and flow clean.
Who it's for
- Beginners putting together a you-solder copper kit, like the EZ Kit Bare
- Builders and fabricators working with copper
- Anyone repairing a copper part that needs a joint that holds
How hard is it?
The solder is the easy part. The skill is in your prep and your heat. This solder flows smoothly when you use it with the right flux, so plan on having flux on hand and don't skip it.
First steps
- Work in a well-ventilated space.
- Clean the copper until the joint surfaces are bright.
- Put flux on both sides of the joint.
- Heat the copper, not the solder, and let the solder flow into the joint.
- Practice on scrap before you do your real seams.
Every good joint is a small experiment in heat and metal. Get a few right on scrap, and you'll feel like an alchemist when your still's seams come out clean and strong.
Owning a still is legal, but distilling alcohol requires federal TTB permits. Follow federal, state, and local law.
