Small stills teach big lessons. The 2 Gallon You-Build EZ KIT is a compact copper still kit that you put together yourself. That's the point: the best way to learn how a still works is to build one.
What you're getting
This is the Advanced Model of the EZ KIT in a 2 gallon size. It comes with the EZ Seal Cap and a 3 inch thumper port, and it costs $379. To confirm every piece that comes in the box, call the family shop at 603-997-6786.
Why start at 2 gallons
A small pot is friendly to a first-timer. It's light enough to move around the bench while you solder, and it needs less water for test runs. It's also a manageable size for learning heat control. Think of it as your lab-bench still, where you can try different temperatures and watch how vapor behaves before you move up to anything bigger.
The skill level
You don't need any distilling experience, but you will need to solder. Don't treat it as a snap-together job. Plan for careful, unhurried work, and practice a few joints on scrap copper first if the torch is new to you.
Getting started
- Set up a well-ventilated workspace with a fire-safe surface.
- Gather a torch, flux, lead-free solder, and emery cloth.
- Polish each fitting until the copper is bright.
- Solder, let it cool, then fill it with water to check for leaks.
- Run plain water through the still before anything else.
A word on the law: owning a still is legal in the US, but distilling alcohol requires federal TTB permits. Many small-still owners use theirs for distilled water and essential oils. Follow federal, state, and local law.
