Six gallons is a comfortable middle ground for a first still. It's big enough to feel like real equipment and small enough to build on a garage workbench. This EZ KIT comes as copper parts that you solder together yourself.
What exactly am I buying?
The 6 Gallon EZ KIT, a You Solder copper moonshine kit, priced at $499. You do the soldering. For a full rundown of what's in the box, call the shop directly at 603-997-6786.
Do I need to know how to solder?
If you don't already, you'll learn. Soldering copper is one of the more forgiving metalworking skills. When the metal is clean, fluxed, and evenly heated, the joint pulls the solder in on its own. Spend an evening practicing on scrap pipe and you'll be ready.
What do I do once it's built?
- Fill it with water and check every joint for drips.
- Fix any weeping joint with more heat and solder.
- Do a full water run to clean the inside and learn how it behaves.
- Take notes on your heat setting, how long the first drip takes, and the coolant temperature.
Why build instead of buying one assembled?
Because then the still is truly yours. Once you understand every seam, you understand the process. Running a still becomes what it really is: an experiment in copper, heat, and vapor that you control.
Is it legal?
Owning a still is legal in the US. Distilling alcohol requires federal TTB permits, and so does making fuel alcohol. Distilled water and essential oils are other common uses. Follow federal, state, and local law.
