Every distiller starts somewhere. For a lot of people, it starts at a workbench with a torch, some solder, and a pile of copper parts. The EZ KIT Advanced Model is that kind of start. You do the soldering, so by the time the still is standing, you know every joint in it.
What's in the box
This is a copper still kit that you solder yourself. The Advanced Model comes with the EZ Seal Cap and a 4 inch thumper port, which gives you a place to connect a thumper. If you want the exact parts list for your size, call the shop at 603-997-6786 before you order.
Pick your size
The EZ KIT comes in twelve sizes: 2, 6, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, and 100 gallon. Prices start at $379. For a first still, a smaller pot is easier to handle on the bench and easier to clean.
How hard is it?
If you've ever sweated a copper pipe joint, this will feel familiar. If you haven't, you can learn it. Soldering comes down to clean metal, flux, even heat, and patience. Practice on scrap copper first, and the real joints will go more smoothly.
Your first steps
- Lay out every part and get to know each piece.
- Dry-fit everything before you solder anything.
- Clean and flux each joint. Heat the copper, not the solder, and use lead-free solder.
- Fill the finished still with water and check for leaks.
- Do a plain water run to clean it and learn how it heats.
That's where the alchemy begins: copper, heat, and vapor, with you running the experiment. Owning a still is legal in the US, but distilling alcohol requires federal TTB permits. People also use stills for distilled water, essential oils, and fuel alcohol (with a permit). Always follow federal, state, and local law.
